Hello! I am Christine Hartweg and I am the author of John Dudley: The Life of Lady Jane Grey’s Father-in-Law and Amy Robsart: A Life and Its End.
I have long been fascinated with both Robert Dudley Earl of Leicester, Queen Elizabeth I’s favourite, and his father, John Dudley Duke of Northumberland. Both men have had a very bad press, mostly underserved. The Dudleys were fascinating people, and the lives of Edmund, John, Robert, and Robert Dudley junior spanned the 16th century and beyond.
For basic information about Robert Dudley and his family please see the Who’s Who? page, where you can also find links to more comprehensive biographies I originally wrote for another site.

Love this! Especially all the picture watching Robert through time.
Thank you. There will be more pictures!
I am a part of cast for the Virginia Renaissance Faire and I am going to be playing Robert Dudley in the upcoming season. I have been looking everywhere for pictures and information, since we try to portray the characters as accurately as possible and I found this site and love it! Great information and great references as well. What I found particually interesting is that you have a very big portrate of Robert in the white jerkin over the red doublet however you only show part if that very excellent portrait on the blog. Would it be possible to send me a copy of that full portrait in that size as that is the best portrait of him with his Master of the Horse chain of office and I’m trying desparately to find some details on that. Look forward to more great information! Thanks.
Hi, thank you very much! You can find the full portrait here: https://allthingsrobertdudley.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/leicester-1560s-by-van-herwijck.jpg. I used this file for the header detail, but did not enlarge it; that’s done automatically, apparently. Hope that’s of some help (I am going to post and write about that picture soon).
I am beyond thrilled to find this site! Robert Dudley is one of MY favorites, too! I can’t wait to read all of the information you have collected & posted! So far, it’s looking good! The Dudleys’ are so intrigiung! Elizabeth & Robert Dudley together is very, very intriguing! I am addicted to the Tudor Dynasty, but, especially Anne Boleyn’s & Queen Elizabeth’s lives, & their courts/favorites/etc. Thank you!
You are welcome! Very happy to hear this!
Christine! I am so happy to have found your blog through the Everything Tudor Era group. It is quite lovely!
Thank you so much! 🙂
